I have just started following the alumni newsletter. What a wonderful tribute Dr. Lou Horlick has written about Dr. John Merriman! John and Lou were mainstays of the Department of Medicine when I was there and I want add my thanks for all they did. They were both great examples of what a physician should be. I am sorry to learn of John's death, but his faith will reassure his family and friends that we don't have to grieve for him.
Many thanks to you, Lou, for your dedication to the history of our medical school.

All who knew John Merriman as a person, colleague and teacher will be saddened at his passing. John Merriman had a special place in my memory. I am a '68 graduate who had a close connection with John that started in medical school and expanded greatly after my internship. At that time, I went full time in Dr. Eric Nanson's labs to complete my doctorate in Surgery/Pharmacology. Of course the problem I chose, which was to develop a new model to study circulatory shock and to prove that it was valid, became larger than I expected. The documentation I felt was required was more than I thought humanly possible. Enter John and his intimate knowledge of computer programming who told me at the start that it would be a "piece of cake" to have the computer calculate and graph all of the data (or more) that I wanted to collect.

Well, the hours he spent tirelessly working with me to get me up to speed with this new technology - even learning Fortran IV-level G - left me in awe (as well as forever grateful) for his grasp of computer science in the days of card readers and computers housed in large rooms. John gave of his time and knowledge to all who he knew. He, along with Lou Horlick and others gave us a knowledge and perspective in medicine we are all grateful for.

So to what is recounted above by Lou Horlick, One can add that his knowledge and application of computers to medicine as well as his knowledge of Clinical Research methodology was far ahead of his time. I now give frequent "Webinars" on the GCP of Clinical Research including Part 11 and I know where it all started for me. For this as well as the superb faculty at the College of Medicine at USask, I am grateful.
